A Few Exercises To Help Ground You
‘To ground’ means to calm your nervous system so that your physical body can feel safe staying deeply rooted in who you are without prematurely reacting to what’s happening around you. Even though grounding by itself does not resolve the issue that may be causing your distress, it helps decrease the likelihood of you reacting in a way you don’t want to. It temporarily guides your attention away from overwhelming experiences and detaches you from the intensity of painful emotions, such as fear, sadness, anger or anxiety. This momentary calm helps create the needed conditions within your body to feel safe enough to be present with what’s happening within and around you, bringing you back to the present.
